ASSOCIATION OF HAMPSHIRE AND ISLE OF WIGHT LOCAL AUTHORITIES
Friday 26 September 1997
IMPROVING LOCAL GOVERNANCE IN HAMPSHIRE
Paper by the Policy Officer
It is recommended that:
the County Council be requested to reconvene the Improving Local Governance Steering Group to continue the work already under way to improve partnership working.
1.A steering group of leading County and District Council members in Hampshire was established as part of the preparation for re-organisation of local government. The ILG Steering Group as it was known potentially looked very similar to meetings of the Association except that it did not include the Isle of Wight.
2. The ILG Steering Group last met in November 1996. It has set in train several areas of work which are continuing or need to be followed up:
Lead Chief Executive
Recreation, Leisure, Tourism
Trading Standards/Environmental Health
3. These areas of work mainly relate to Hampshire County Council and the District Councils. There are also likely to be other studies and improvements in this area. It is suggested that it would be inappropriate to bring detailed discussion about this work to full Association meetings. Accordingly, it is suggested that the County Council be asked to reconvene the ILG Steering Group so that the momentum behind this work can be maintained.
