Paper 14A - 26 November 1999 Meeting

ASSOCIATION OF HAMPSHIRE AND ISLE OF WIGHT LOCAL AUTHORITIES

26 November 1999

LOCAL GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION (LGA) EXECUTIVES

Report by the Policy Manager

RECOMMENDATIONS

(1) That the report be noted;

(2) That the representatives on the LGA be asked to report back to the Association; and

(3) That those representatives who have reported back be thanked for their work.

1. The Local Government Association (LGA) has reorganised its structure to make it "quick on its feet" but at the same time as inclusive of its member authorities as possible. The new structure took effect from June 1999. Its decision-making structure consists of eleven-person "Executives" for each policy area and replaces the old "large and unwieldy committees". Each are appointed by the party political groups nationally. Key roles within the LGA have been shared around political groups to ensure a full regional mix. This year's arrangements give the following political makeup for each Executive:

Labour 5 members
Conservative 3 members
Liberal Democrat 2 members
Independent 1 member

Total 11

In addition, for each policy area there is a Forum consisting of a much wider membership. At the time of printing, the membership of the Forums has not been finalised.

2. A list of Executive Committees to which representatives from local authorities in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight have been appointed are shown in the annex to this report.
